Policy Statement

To maintain compliance with the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) and to protect employees from the health hazards associated with bloodborne pathogens, (e.g. Hepatitis B Virus, Hepatitis C Virus, HIV, etc); all University employees, reasonably anticipated to have occupational exposure to human blood and other potentially infectious human material (OPIM), as defined by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), are required to meet the requirements of the Syracuse University Bloodborne Pathogens Program. Area Supervisors are responsible for identifying employees that are reasonably anticipated to have exposure to human blood or OPIM. Area supervisors must ensure individuals with occupational exposure to human blood or OPIM are enrolled in the Bloodborne Pathogens Program and receive the appropriate training offered by Environmental Health Office (EHO). University employees enrolled in the Bloodborne Pathogens Program are responsible for attending the annual bloodborne pathogens training sessions and for conducting related operations in accordance with standard operating procedures and appropriate work practice controls as described in the Program. A hard copy of the Bloodborne Pathogens Program must be available to all employees upon request. Supervisors of employees who are occupationally exposed to blood or OPIM must maintain a printed copy of the most current version of the Program.
